Why are Volunteer Firefighters needed?

In an emergency, more trained people are needed to assist with calls and cover stations and this is where the Volunteers come in. The Volunteer Firefighters represent a large part of our organization. They are our second line of defense by responding to emergencies that occur in our community. Our Volunteer Firefighters donate their time, train to a high standard and participate in all aspects of Department functions.

What does a Volunteer Firefighter do?

Our Volunteers do everything career Firefighters do: respond to fires, traffic accidents, and medical emergencies.

What are the requirements to become a Volunteer Firefighter?

How much will it cost me?

Nothing.  EDHFD pays for all the training and equipment.

How will I know what to do as a Volunteer?

Training is provided on the evenings of the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month as well as the mornings of the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month. These training dates are subject to change.

Is attendance required for every training event?

It is to your benefit and the community’s benefit if you attend as much training as possible, but most events are not mandatory. We do understand that you may have other obligations. These training events will keep you well informed and in practice. Certain important events may be mandatory.

I can’t leave my job to go to an emergency, is that OK?

Volunteers respond when they are able. When committed at work or out of there area, we hope others will respond, and that is why it is important to have more Firefighters.

How much time will I have to commit?

The time you commit to responding to calls and training is up to you, however, the more you are involved in this program the better the outcome will be for the community as a whole. Training is provided on the evenings of the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month as well as the mornings of the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month (totaling 12 hours a month). These training dates are subject to change.

How soon can I begin responding to calls?

Once you are hired, if you have a certificate from a certified fire academy, you can begin responding to calls and participating in training as soon as the orientation process is complete.

What if I have never gone through a fire academy before?

If you do not have a certificate from a certified fire academy when you are hired, we will put you through an academy. It is 160 hours of training in a 5 month period and consists of evenings and some weekends. After you have graduated from the fire academy, you can begin responding to calls and participating in monthly training drills as soon as the orientation process is complete.

How can I get more information?

Please contact Battalion Chief Roberts with any further questions.

Becoming a Volunteer Firefighter

Being a Volunteer Firefighter is an extremely rewarding experience. Firefighters make a difference in the community by coming to the aid of people in times of greatest need. Life and death is often in the balance. El Dorado Hills Volunteer Firefighters have and will continue to positively impact the wellbeing of all people in this community.

Our Volunteer Firefighter Hiring Program begins every year in October (subject to change). The number of positions available differs depending on many different factors. Each qualified applicant must successfully pass an interview, a physical agility test, a polygraph exam and a medical exam.

The new hires that possess a CPR certification, an EMT-Basic certificate and a certificate of completion from a certified Fire Academy are typically brought onboard in January. Those that have neither certificate are put through both programs and are brought on as Active Volunteer Firefighter's at completion.
